Our breeding program
We do not breed specifically for sale, but only when we want to carry on our program and have two dogs worthy of breeding a good quality bullmastiff. My belief is before anyone decides to breed they need to do health clearances on their dogs ie: hips, elbows, patellas, hearts, kidney, eyes and any other congenital defects that may affect their breed. They need to compete in the show ring to get an honest opinion and evaluation of their dogs. Breeding should never be done " Just to make money". It is a tool to better the breed. If you cannot produce better than what you have, you should not be breeding, in my opinion. You should know your AKC standard, inside and out and be willing to admit when you have a dog that does not fit nicely in that standard. As for temperment, I do not want timid or fearful dogs. I do not want unstable dogs. I try to achieve dogs with stable temperments, with courage and loyalty. Not all bullmastiffs are suitable for breeding, even attaining a championship does not validate breeding a dog. Many factors should be considered before a potential dam or sire are used for breeding. The parentage, ancestors and siblings of potential acquistions should be researched, conformation to the breed standard, temperment and freedom from genetic disease must all be considered. A championship does not prove a dog is free of elbow or hip dysplasia, nor does a "good" OFA, mean a dog is stable in temperment, and superior enough in conformation to be bred. Overall, the show ring is an excellent venue for evaluation of conformation. Over the years it has been our responsibility to spay and neuter dogs when they were not suitable for breeding. Occasionally these dogs are available for adoption.
Juniors & Bullmastiffs
I am very proud of the fact TWO of Louie's offspring have been very successful Junior Handler dogs. Katie Martin and Willie won the Nationals Jr. Handler Award twice, and went to the Jr. Handler Competition at Westminster. Katie put every point on Willie and finished his championship. Courtney has been showing Ben since he turned six months old. She has not only finished his championship, but she has won several Best Jr Handler in shows and won the 2006 ABA Nationals Junior Handler award. They have also won Best of Breed's over specials. Juniors and their dogs have wonderful bonds and trust. These dogs have impeccable temperments, making them not only wonderful family dogs, great show dogs, and trustworthy dogs for the young, upcoming handlers. They are not the typical breed choice of Junior Handlers but often they make fabulous duo's who excel in the ring.
